Girls Improved Learning Outcomes Program
The Girls Improved Learning Outcomes program (GILO) is a USAID-funded, three-year program (2008-2011) designed to ensure
that girls have equitable access to primary and middle school education. The project worked to improve the learning outcomes
of girls education in 300 schools in the seven USAID
reform governorates in Upper Egypt.
The GILO Program approach works to
empower stakeholders in schools by targeting students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the community at large.
The program focused on using internationally-accepted best practices to benchmark the standards for
management

teaching
,
learning
and
assessment
to drive change.
GILO program objectives included:

Increasing participation and retaining girls in schools
through girl-friendly, pedagogical practice

best practices

in-service training

Challenging school administrators to be engines of change

Encouraging effective partnerships between the BOTs (Board of Trustees )and school management

worked closely with principals, teachers and supervisors to:

Ensure readiness for accreditation based on national
standards of education

Oversee the continuous self-assessment of schools to ensure consistent improvement

Draft school improvement plans

Implement school-to-school exchange

Implement cluster-based teaching and group learning strategies
CID Inc.
identified and trained 9,000 teachers and 2,500 supervisors within targeted communities to raise awareness about the importance
of active, student-centered learning. Cumulative assessments of the training programs were also conducted.

oversaw the training of 900 principals, deputies and administrators in the fundamentals of school leadership and effective
administration across the seven governorates.
